All Time Best of Cap’n Aux!

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY, CREW!!!

A special Valentine’s treat for you . . . Because I love you so much!

All Time Best of Cap'n Aux!Folks, I’ve been blogging for your aviation enjoyment for over six years now!

Up our Blog Buddy expedition goes, to the 118th floor of the Ritz for drinks above Hong Kong!

In that time, we’ve had some spectacular adventures together. I’ve traveled the U.S. and the globe to meet you. I can tell you, unequivocally, that that has been by far the most rewarding treat of this whole blogging thing: Meeting you!

Over the years, I’ve received plenty of feedback from you, in regards to the blog and my other writings for both Airways Magazine and my Books, and I’ve responded accordingly. In addition, the internet provides wonderfully detailed data in regards to what posts are more popular than others. So, for your viewing pleasure, here’s the Best of the Best, from the past half dozen years!

BUT FIRST . . .

THIS POST IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF RANDY LAUSON

FA Randy Lauson Bunny All Time Best of Cap’n Aux!

Randy hugs fellow FA and Team Aux Producer Bunny.

Last week, our airline family lost a very beloved flight attendant. Randy was always one of my very favorite crew to fly with, for a number of reasons. He was so good, and so attentive to his passengers and crew, that a long-time jaded flying journalist wrote a story about him. Yes, he was that impactful!

Randy, THANK YOU for the FANTASTIC service over the years!

We will dearly, sorely miss you.

 And Now . . .

All Time Best of Cap’n Aux!

We’ll do like we did with the last post, our annual “Best of” the previous year, by doing a countdown of sorts of the Top 10ish or so, along with some extra treats and tidbits that I don’t want you to miss. For you long-time Blog Buddies, many will be familiar to you. For you newer folks, you’re in for some serious avgeek treats!

#10: Cap’n Aux vs. Hurricane Hugo

All Time Best of Cap'n Aux!

What’s wrong with this picture?…Very wrong?!

VISS Jumpseating on the Breitling ‘Round the World DC-3 Part 3!One of my all-time wildest adventures—and certainly something I coulda done without—was having to evacuate our idyllic Virgin Islands Seaplane Shuttle base in 1989, when the first-ever Category 5 hurricane made a direct hit on our beloved home, St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.

As we all recently experienced from last season’s incredibly devastating hurricane season, they are nothing but massive behemoths of destruction, to be prepared for and avoided at all costs. Here’s Part 1 and 2 of my adventures from 1989.

If you haven’t seen it before, don’t miss it: the photos are absolutely mind-boggling!

All Time Best of Cap’n Aux!

Over the years, I’ve interviewed many of you, and have been interviewed multiple times as well. Here’s one of the first, from a student looking for info from an airline pilot. I think it’s also one of the best, as high schooler Cameron asks the same questions most people ask of me daily.

What’s life like in the sky? Here’s your answer!

#8: Making of a European Pilot

All Time Best of Cap’n Aux!

My awesome Blog Buddy Cap’n Raphael Favre has had some amazing adventures that we’ve chronicled here, including his ’round the world trek flying Breitling’s fully-restored DC-3. In his “civilian life”, he’s an A320 captain for a European airline. How’d he get there? Here’s his story!

This was the Number One Post of 2016.

#7: May the Fourth Be With You!

This is a fun, whimsical post, and one of my personal all-time favorites. Why? Because we celebrate “Unofficial Star Wars Day” (You know, as in, “May the 4th be with you!”) by reviewing some of my favorite fictional Captains, from TV and movies. We talk about their quirks, and why I, as a real-life airline Captain, look up to them. Or, at least, get inspired by the traits that make them so Captain-y.

An entertaining education for you Cap’ns-to-be!

Contrary to the glam Hollywood depictions of airline life, there are downsides to this business—lots of them. And, if you’re planning a career in aviation, whether in the cockpit, back in the cabin, or on the ground, you’d better be aware of them. Here’s a few of the pitfalls!

#3: Cap’n Aux Answers Your Avgeek Questions

This series consistently marks atop the ranks for hits, and no wonder. You, the blog reader, wrote in with myriad questions about the airline life. Questions ranging from what do I do on my overnights to what’s the function of the A320 Cost Index on the Perf Page of the MCDU!

The series that swelled from 2 posts into 6. If you have a question, I’m sure I answered it here!

#2: The Airline Cockpit in 7 “Simple” Steps

Yet another consistently popular post, this one leads you by the hand to the airline cockpit. All you need is a little chutzpah, a lotta dough, and several years of extremely committed elbow grease! Is it worth it? Only you can decide that!

And what’s the Number One Cap’n Aux blog post of all time? Before we get to that, a word from our sponsors . . .

Team Aux Jessica Cox OshKosh All Time Best of Cap'n Aux!

Team Aux does Oshkosh, by gosh! L-R: Tech guru John “Otto Pilot” Keith, Food Disposal Specialist Jackson C, the famous Jessica Cox, Team Aux Producer Bunny Laverty, Yours Truly, Jessica’s hubby Patrick, and Transportation Engineer, Cap’n David C!

Folks, Team Aux has been thrilled to bring you the coolest of aviation stuff for the past six years, and we endeavor to do so well into the future.

However, after 9 books, dozens of Airways articles and videos, and hundreds of blog posts, I find that it’s time to rest a bit, to allow the Creative Fluid Reservoir to refill.

Moreover, my other interests, such as banjo and guitar, golfing, adventure travel and other sports, have been put on the back burner for too long.

In order to rebalance these things, I’m planning on backing off the blog for a bit.

What’s more, there may be some pilot transition training in the near future, as I eye the prospects of an upgrade to some fun overseas flying on the A330, 767, 777, or 787. The decision hasn’t quite been made, but I’m excited to explore the possibilities!

Cap’n Aux, International Widebody Cap’n? I must admit, it does have a ring to it! And, just think of the blog posts I’ll be able to whip up for you from my further adventures!

During this mini hiatus, I will still be completely reachable at the usual social media outlets:

Cap’n Aux Media

I also still plan to be available for guest speaking arrangements, books signings, and, heck, lunch with you when I’m on an overnight in your city! And, speaking of signings, let me know if you’d like a copy of one or more of my books signed to you or a loved one! (And, if we do indeed meet up for that lunch, you will automatically get a free signed copy of one of my books!)

For any of the above requests, or to simply chat or ask a question, simply contact me at eric@capnaux.com, and we’ll go from there!
