IAH, HOU, MSY, #HurricaneHarvey and YOU!

THANK YOU For Your Support of Puerto Rico Care Lift! This year’s Top 10 post begins with a guest blog from none other than The Renewed Pilot (Twitter: @phugoidflyer), a nameless pilot blogger over at, shall we say, “Brand X” airline. This is the harrowing story of his narrow escape as he Captains the last flight out of Saigon—make that Houston!—as the soon-to-be devastating Hurricane Harvey encroaches. A real nail-biter, this one also made it into my latest book,

There I Wuz! Adventures From 3 Decades in the Sky Volume IV

Don’t forget, even now folks are still recovering from the incredible devastation wrought by last year’s hurricanes. We also followed fellow Airways Magazine employees and Blog Buddies as they heroically helped the people in devastated areas, and especially Puerto Rico. Check out their incredible efforts and the amazing video of their relief efforts on our Puerto Rico Disaster Relief #Aviation Style! Better yet, join in on the effort with the donation link provided!

Former NFL star Chris Draft invites Bunny and me to the pre-game gridiron as part of his TeamDraft.org lung cancer charity. Sadly, Chris lost his beloved wife Lakeasha to lung cancer, and now he travels the country blessing and motivating others like her. Check out his worthy cause at TeamDraft.org!

As I mentioned in my last post for 2017, Miracles and Blessings in 2017 and 2018!, it was truly a year full of challenges, but also miracles. Early in the Spring, Team Aux’s Producer Bunny was diagnosed with lung cancer. A nonsmoking athlete all her life, national bodybuilding champ Bunny was, understandably, devastated. The evil C word thwarted her 2017 goal of adding to her national bodybuilding trophy collection, and instead saw her undergo surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. In December, the doctors officially diagnosed her as in remission, and she is now back in the gym 3 hours a day, looking for what is already a spectacular comeback.

Thank you, God, and the forces of the universe, for her healing!

Check out our NFL gridiron adventure on our Dance, Smile, Live Fly post!

Jumpseating on a Piece of History

Best of Cap’n Aux 2017!Unless you’ve been hiding this blog under a rock for the past year, you no doubt caught last summer’s series of posts surrounding the exciting, history-making, world record-breaking ‘Round the Globe tour of Breitling’s fully-restored DC-3—and my experience jumpseating on said piece of history! The story made the September 2017 cover of Airways Magazine, and garnered quite a lot of great comments from readers. This series also made it into There I Wuz! Volume IV.

A 3-part series, I include all three links here, starting with Part 1:

2017: Aerial Adventures Hong Kong Style!

How did Cap’n Aux spend his 2017 winter vacation? Chumming with Blog Buddies like you in the skies of Hong Kong!

This was one sweet aeronautical adventure, wherein Bunny and I were invited by one of our original “Sons of Cap’n Aux Blog,” Swayne Martin, to tour Hong Kong with him.

Fellow Blog Buddy and local HK resident Dante L played tour guide, and even surprised us with a helicopter tour over the amazing city!

Lots of fun, as well as a couple amazing aviation videos!

Fallen hero Best of Cap'n Aux 2017!

Flying a Fallen Hero. Saluting a fallen soldier, whom our airline escorted to his final resting place.

Of course, in any given year, we all experience triumphs, failures, gains and losses. And, nothing is more devastating than the loss of a loved one. That is why I always take the time each year to honor our military heroes on Veteran’s Day, as well as our fallen heroes on Memorial Day. Don’t miss last year’s Veteren’s Day encore post Honoring Our Heroes, with a touching story of a chance meeting with a Navy Korean War vet. The article can also be found int There I Wuz! Volume IV.

2017: An Airways Odyssey

Boeing DreamlifterAs a Columnist for Airways Magazine, I once again was lucky enough to get invited to be a guest speaker aboard their annual cruise, this time to Alaska. We kicked off the cruise with a tour of Boeing Field’s amazing aviation museum, as well as a tour of the Boeing plant. What’s more, while there, we got to view the landing of, not one, but two Boeing Dreamlifters, which I captured on video!

Tons of avgeek treats in this one. Don’t miss it!

Sully Movie and Lessons From the “Miracle on the Hudson”

Coincidentally, our previous blog post commemorated the 9 year anniversary of the famed “Miracle on the Hudson” with an updated post that attempts to glean lessons for pilots from the fabled event. Here’s a link to that updated post, in case you missed it.

Whether you’re a pilot or not, it’s well worth the read!

During a little plane spotting on the T4 roof at PHX, Dillon goes nuts to spy the elusive “America West Heritage Plane” pulling in!

Everybody’s favorite Cap’n, Cap’n Dillon, is nuts about both aviation, and the Miracle on the Hudson story.

Dillon continues to live a charmed life, as pilots take him up for a joyride just about every week now. And, this Christmas, Cap’n Mike D surprised him by painting his name on his Stearman biplane!

Told ya, the kid lives a charmed life!

The Airline Cockpit it in 7 Simple Steps

An updated version of an older post, this one continues to harvest traffic for obvious reasons. It’s my best advice to you up-n-coming pilots, and those dreaming of a flying career! For ground pounders, it also offers some fascinating insights into what pilots must undergo to pursue their careers.

As mentioned in the above article, the long-awaited “Pilot Shortage” is finally upon us.

One of the major factors is the massive drove of retirements that will soon peak at nearly 1,000 per year—and that’s just at my own major airline!

In any case, for those of you who are up n coming in the industry, the future’s so bright, you gotta wear shades!

To with, a couple fun pics from a retirement party for my good buddy and fellow coworker, Captain Ivan N!

Secrets of an Airline Freight Dog

Best of Cap’n Aux 2017!I love this post, because it highlights one of the many unsung heroes of aviation: the “Airline Freight Dog.” For those working their way up the aviation ladder, “The Royal Order of the Sleepless Knights” is still one option—one that comes with hard work, long, tough, backside-of-the-clock hours, and amazing piloting experience.

This article also appears in There I Wuz! Volume IV

Kudos to all you Freight Dogs out there. Cap’n Aux salutes you!

Confessions of a Former Airline Pilot

This post is special to me, as it is an interview with my dear friend, former Captain Ron Budnick. He chased his dream of an airline career, caught it, and—well, that is where his tale begins. An excellent “cautionary tale” for those dreaming of a career flying airliners.

Air Rage in the (Un)Friendly Skies

What’s Going On?

This post was pretty high up in traffic as well, and I don’t want you to miss it. We discuss the now-infamous “forced re-accommodation” of a passenger off a United Airlines affiliate carrier, which wound up giving United a major black eye.

Other violent incidents continue, and I do my best to straighten it all out.
