Interlude: Looking Forward—Looking Back
Warning: today’s post runs all over the emotional map!
Folks, yesterday we had fun celebrating “Star Wars Day”—as in, “May the 4th be with you.”
However, I just found out that yesterday was also a very important day as well:
In light of this, I would like to also bring up a very difficult anniversary that we will be facing in my home state of Arizona on June 30: the one-year anniversary of the Yarnell Hill Fire tragedy, when 19 heroic firefighters from the “Granite Mountain Hotshot” team lost their lives.
This was the greatest loss of firefighters since 9/11.
During their 125-mile funeral procession, tens of thousands of Arizonans and well-wishers lined the roads.
Please see links below for their story
I want to bring all of this up because it ties in with an important event that I have been looking forward to sharing with you:
This week, I will be flying into the heart of the “Happiest Place on Earth” . . . or, more precisely, their Studios . . .
I have accepted an invitation by Disney Studios to attend their Aviation Press Day to celebrate the release of their new animated movie, PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE!
Along with other members of the Aviation community, I will be rubbing elbows with the STARS of the new Disney movie, the sequel to Disney’s animated movie, PLANES.
Treats I’m looking forward to this week:
- A private screening of PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE
- A behind the scenes look into the aviation research that went into the film
- Meeting The makers
- Exploring the Visual Effects
- Exploring how they choreographed the Aerial Ballet

For now, enjoy the trailer to PLANES: FIRE & RESCUE, which opens in theaters on July 18th:
And, if that’s not enough, later this month I will fulfill one of my greatest aviation blog dreams—
I will be interviewing my all-time greatest pilot-hero!
Cap’n Sully
Chuck Yeager
Jessica Cox!
YES! One of the most amazing people on the planet, Jessica Cox is the first and only pilot with no arms to ever be certified to fly!
She is now a worldwide motivational speaker, black belt in Tae Kwon Do, surfer, SCUBA diver . . . you name it, she’s done it!
Again, I will be writing extensively about Jessica both here and on NYCAviation.com in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned!
In the meantime, enjoy this wonderful vid about this amazing young woman!

Finally, let me gently guide you back into a somber mood as we look forward to honoring our military fallen on Memorial Day, May 26.
If you haven’t seen it yet, this week I posted a Memorial Day story, “Flying a Fallen Hero,” on fellow Blogging in Formation team member Rob Burgon’s TallyOne.com site.
Here’s the direct link: http://tallyone.com/flying-a-fallen-hero/
This story will also appear on NYCAviation.com later this month.
It will also be featured in my new anthology of flying stories,
There I Wuz! Adventures from 3 Decades in the Sky, Volume I
to be published on ebook, June 18, on Amazon Kindle platform!
