Aviating—Navigating—Communicating!

Aviating—Navigating—Communicating!

Folks, from the flight blog, welcome back aboard!

Yes, I took a little hiatus from regular blog posting, but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy aviating, navigating, and generally avgeeking out!

As we say in the biz, a good pilot must Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate.

So, back to Communicating!

Cross Country Pingpong!

Pretty little ‘Muricans, all in a row!

Been flying my arse off, bouncing across the country in what I like to call “Cross Country Pingpong!” Of course, I’m still flying my favorite bird, trusty ol’ Fifi, that beautiful A321-class Airbus.

What’s more, I’ve been traveling quite a bit in the cockpit jumpseat. Here’s proof!

After nearly 25 years in Fifi, I’m ready for another challenge. Some of you may have heard a rumor that I have already moved to the Boeing 757/767 fleet. While I do have a bid in for it, I have yet to be awarded the slot. I’ll be keeping you informed!

OSHkosh, by Gosh!

After a 2-year absence, I was finally able to make it back to the world’s Aviation Mecca, the weeklong aviation extravaganza called EAA Airventure, better known as Oshkosh! Cap’n Dave and I jumpseated up for a few days, and as always, a good time was had by all!

Amazing Airshows all week, including massive WWII warbird flybys!

Passing the Torch!

Honoring the airline Captain who originally inspired me . . .

Captain Frank A, Republic/ Northwest, Ret.

As a child, there was only one person I knew who was a real, bonafide airline pilot. He was my father’s buddy, Captain Frank A. I worshipped him from afar, always excited to hear tales of his plying the skies for Republic Airlines, later Northwest, back in the day. I always wondered what had happened to him.

Well….

By freak coincidence—and, I think, a little nudge by the Almighty—it turns out that he is also a family friend of Team Aux’s own John “Otto Pilot” K! Upon hearing his name uttered by Otto’s mother, my jaw dropped, and I insisted we visit him immediately!

I shook his hand, and told him how he had inspired me, and, in turn, through my blog and writings, I’ve been able to inspire some of our NextGen, such as Otto.

Watch the vid, but be sure to have a tissue handy!

Cap’n Frank is long retired. In fact, he just celebrated his 95th birthday! Otto was able to join the festivities, and on behalf of Team Aux, presented to him a lovely gift that made his eyes water!

THANK YOU, Captain Frank, for your inspiration!

Passing the Torch, Part II . . .

Honoring the memory of one of Team Aux’s Own.

Chief of Security, Vicious Attack Cat Tarzan, reports in after his patrol of the perimeter at Aux HQ.

On a sad note, I must inform you of the passing of my beloved cat Tarzan.

Team Aux’s Chief of Security, “Vicious Attack Cat” Tarzan was often featured here on my blog, during his many adventures. He lived for 17 and a half very wild years, surely using all of his nine lives before finally succumbing to kidney failure.

In all my years, I have had many special pets, both cats and dogs. Several were particularly special to me, but none was ever bonded as closely as Tarzan and me. Losing him was like losing an arm.

Tarzan, I will never, ever forget you. I love you, my boy!

I would like to share a video that I made in his honor, only a week or two before his passing. Again, pull out those hankies . . .

After his passing, I painted a watercolor of one of my favorite photos of him . . .

FLY!

Let’s end on a happy note, shall we?

Aviating—Navigating—Communicating!I am very excited to announce the publication of Captain Richard de Crespigny’s new book, FLY!

Captain de Crespigny is author of QF32 and Captain of  2010’s A380 inflight engine explosion (see our video interviews with him, here on this blog, as well as the written interviews in Airways Magazine and There I Wuz! Volume 3.)

I was honored to receive an advanced copy of the book, and it really blew me away. You can read my quote on the inside cover of the book, but in short, here’s my take:

FLY! is an amazing book that is REQUIRED reading for any aviator, whether student or grizzled captain. Not only is it chock full of excellent advice for the airline captain of today, it also has excellent advice for navigating the stormy skies of your own life.

FLY! is available on amazon et al, as well as his own site at qf32.aero.
