Ladies and gentlemen, from the Flight Blog, this is your Cap’n Aux speaking…

Lately I’ve been getting a lot of questions on Quora about what the pilot says—and doesn’t say—on the PA to passengers.

Most questions imply that perhaps pilots are holding back on information, or outright lying to passengers, perhaps to avoid panic in an emergency.

Wrong!

I’ve got a bit to say about this!

BUT FIRST…

Congratulations to Team Aux's Own

John "Otto Pilot" Keith!

Congrats, Otto! (C) On Left is Cap'n David, of Southwest Airlines (Ret.), who stars in several of our videos, including "Cap'n Dillon's Ecstatic Adventure!" R is Dr. Jeremy Lee, the physician who first took Otto up in his Cirrus, and ignited his love for flight!

Nominated for CFI of the Year!

While Otto was edged out for the top spot (it’s rigged, I tell ya!), he was in the Top Running!

Congratulations, Cap’n Otto! You’re NUMBER ONE in our logbook!!!

AND NOW…

Over the decades, I’ve found that the more honest and forthcoming you are about the situation—a mechanical delay, for example—the more “forgiving”, or at least understanding, passengers will be.

Of course, you can’t drone on and on about the minutiae of the possibly complex nature of the situation, but you also can’t say, “Pay no attention to the mechanic working on our Right Engine.”

So, you’ve got to find that middle ground that informs, in layman’s terms, what’s up.

And, more to the point, your best guess as to how long a delay this may incur.

Cap'n Roger Over of the ill-fated "Airplane!" and one of his epic PAs. Ever been in a Turkish prison?

I’d rather show than tell, so here’s an actual PA I made in the 777 for my recent LHR-MIA flight. This is pretty close to my “standard” PA that I make on most flights, barring any delays or issues.

It’s only slightly edited, for brevity and clarity. I did my best to clean up the audio, but there’s a lot of background noise, such as my FOs and FAs chatting—because that’s what happens during a real PA!

Enjoy!

Looking back, I realize that I’ve written quite a bit on this subject of PAs, right here on the blog! So, below is a short list of related links.

You’ll find them quite informative, fun, and funny, if I do say so myself!
