Imagine, if you will, a world in which a maverick wildcard wins the presidency. Where airlines race each other to the bottom line, dragging quality, workers, pay—and worst of all, safety—down with them. Fellow pilot-author Karlene Petitt’s new novel, Flight For Sanity ($20 hardcover, $15 paperback, $9.99 kindle), portends just that (well, all but the Super Bowl bit. I mean, nobody would believe that!)
Sadly, her premise is not so far off from the truth. In fact, this novel, while fiction, eerily parallels issues we are seeing in our beloved industry today.
With her fourth novel, Petitt really hits her stride. This is easily her best novel yet, and cuts to the heart of critical safety issues today’s airline pilots face. Rich characters, gripping flight scenes, and even tidbits of wisdom for the upcoming pilot have become Petitt’s hallmark, and sets this book apart as a rich, taut thriller with much to say.
Petitt’s beloved character Captain Darby is back in classic form, along with comrades Kathryn and Jackie. Between carpools, Christmas parties and diaper changes, the three battle shady political hacks, greedy corporate executives—and possible assassins.
The powers that be seem more interested in branding Darby a nutcase than listening to her alarming calls for a safety system that is not only lacking, but nonexistent. Worse, a murder too close to home hints that there’s no limits to what these slimeballs will do to silence Darby and her intrepid team.
Think that’s an unrealistic plot? As an airline pilot, I can assure you: this story is straight out of today’s headlines. And, sadly, closer to the truth than you know.
