Boeing #737Max Update—& Fun Stuff with Cap’n Dillon!

Boeing #737Max Update—& Fun Stuff with Cap’n Dillon!

Folks, it’s been a tough season for the international airline industry. After a blessing of several years of relatively benign issues and impressive safety records, we’ve had a string of harrowing fatal accidents, from the Atlas 767 in IAH (#5Y391) to the Lion Air (#JT610)  and Ethiopian Airlines (#ET302) 737 Max crashes.

FIRST AND FOREMOST, from everyone here at Team Aux, we would like to extend our deepest, sincerest condolences for all victims and loved ones involved in all three crashes.

The viability of the 737 Max series itself has now been called into question, and was finally grounded, by Presidential Order, in the U.S. While it may cause airlines and their passengers some inconvenience here and there—and Boeing, no doubt, tons of money—obviously, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Many of you have contacted me with questions regarding the Max issue, so much so that I felt the need to write this post. However, I will have to take a somewhat hands-off approach here by saying that, having flown an Airbus A321-series for the past quarter century, I’m pretty rusty on all things Boeing, and not exactly the expert that can knowledgeably speak up on this topic.

That said, I will say this: the jury is still out on whether there is an actual design or software flaw, and many other issues, such as weather, airline culture, pilot training and experience, etc. etc., may very well factor into the final Probable Causes of the accidents in question.

These things take time, LOTS of time, to resolve, and the final NTSB report (for those accidents analyzed in the States, at least) typically take at least a year.

I do feel that we’re approaching a saturation point and starting to feel “737 Max” burnout, as it were. Despite the initial perceived foot-dragging (which itself is now being investigated), the plane is now grounded, and Boeing and the FAA are on it. The system is working as designed, Boeing is an EXCELLENT company with an EXCELLENT safety record, and I expect a serious investigation and SAFE fix soon. Remember, we are talking about the safest transportation—by magnitudes—that mankind has ever devised.

Many of you have sent me some excellent articles on the 737 Max topic, so for those that wish to read more, see the links below. I’ll also include some links to related Cap’n Aux articles, as the issue at hand does seem to have echoes of other Airbus related problems and fixes from the past as well, most notably Air France 447 and AirAsia 8501.

Cap’n Dillon’s Fantastic Flyin’ Formation!

Recently, my fellow aviators and I got together to throw Cap’n Dillon a big surprise. (If you don’t know who Cap’n Dillon is, be sure to watch “Cap’n Dillon’s Ecstatic Adventure,” below!) Not only did we get together for a formation flight in a couple of Stearman biplanes, but we also surprised him with something very rare, and very special . . .

As I reported last year, Captain Mike surprised Dillon by painting his name on the cockpit of his Stearman biplane. . .

Well, with this in mind, Team Aux Producer Bunny and I have been working on a very special project. But first, as always, an airplane ride! Strap in, and come on along with Cap’n Dillon for another aerial adventure!

Special thanks to model maker Dang, and to Cap’ns Tony A. and Mike D. (among others) who continue to help make Cap’n Dillon’s aviation dreams come true!

THIS POST IS DEDICATED TO THE VICTIMS AND LOVED ONES of the 5Y391, JT610, and ET302 accidents.
