Black Swan Event: the Captain De Crespigny Story—Pt. 1

RDC_2 (381x480)His name is Captain Richard De Crespigny.

He flies one of the world’s largest airliners, the Airbus A380, for Qantas Airlines. And on November 4, 2010, he and his crew suffered what is called a “Black Swan event.” 852191-captain-richard-de-crespignyAn engine failure is extremely rare; only 1 out of every 5 pilots will experience an engine failure in their career. But this was no ordinary “failure.” The Number 2 engine exploded, damaging all but one system and rupturing fuel tanks. RDC For two grueling hours, Captain De Crespigny and his gallant crew fought to restore control and safely land the crippled plane. In the end, all passengers and crew walked away safely, with not a single injury.

Screen Shot 2015-04-06 at 2.12.09 PMDon’t miss Captain De Crespigny’s excellent, very active blog as well, where he discusses important current events and answers questions. Recently, he wrote an excellent piece about the Germanwings crash entitled, “Keep Calm!”, wherein he discusses fear, risk and reality. The piece is a healthy dose of reality about fear overruling our rational decisions. Link: http://qf32.aero/2015/03/28/keep-calm/#comments

In Part 2 and 3 of our video interview,

We’ll be discussing serious aviation issues for pilots, such as safety and CRM (Crew Resource Management), and how the Australian and Qantas culture both played a role in the safe outcome of the QF32 emergency. Also, the Captain will tell us the harrowing tale of how he actually landed the plane on that fateful day. A fascinating discussion, and important advice for today’s pilot!
